on what it really is.It is actually a computing concept forwarded by Cisco.It
can be considered as an advancement or development to cloud computing
environment.
‘Internet of things’ is providing each and every object an
IP address.This idea will lead to great confusions.According to analysts by the
end of 2020 about 50-75 billion devices will be connected.This will make the
data warehouses full.And it is said that the future computing is on cloud.This
demands processing and storing of huge data in cloud storages which requires
high bandwidth.Otherwise it affects the quality and time of processing.To
prevent this,Cisco introduced a concept called fog.
Basically Fog is a computing model designed for internet of
things.The difference between the two models is same as the difference between
the real cloud and fog.Cloud is far away from the people.But fog is near to
people.While Cloud stores data somewhere in it’s server where in which data
have to travel long distance,fog stores the data near the user.ie in
routers,set top boxes or access points.Thi s reduces the requirement of high
bandwidth.
Here data is processed locally.This make it possible for
small computing tasks to be done without fetching data from the server.Instead
of batch processing,fog make use of real time interactions.
Iox architecture
It is an application enablement framework presented by Cisco
to give life to fog computing model.This is a joint infrastructure combining
elements of open source software linux and Cisco’s operating system
ios(internetworking operating system).
Applications:
According to cisco the following are the main applications
of fog computing.
a.Connected cars
by 2017,most of the cars on the streets will be
connected.Cisco tells that the real time interaction of fog help car’s access
points and traffic lights get connected
b.Smart grids
Intelligent electrical grids can make use of fog model.Here
the energy sources are being shifted considering the availability and
requirement of energy load balancing in smart energy distribution’s network
edge demands such a model.
c.Smart traffic lights
This enables an ambulance to pass through traffic smoothly
by sensing the flashing lights of ambulance.
d.Self maintaining trains
Here the senser to monitor the ball bearings of train will
give you the environmental conditions and can give alert to control room if it
find anything wrong.
There are many more applications to fog computing.We can say
that upto a limit fog can change the future of computi ng.especially internet
of things.
